- When Life Feels Overwhelming and Impossible ~Huff Post
Do you ever get overwhelmed? What causes it? Is it your job? Your family? Your finances? Temptations? Outside circumstances that are out of your control? Or is it a combination of ALL of these things? Let me tell you now, there is VICTORY for you today! Every task has already been accomplished for us through our Savior, Jesus Christ.
Beloved, no obstacle is too big for God! There is victory over your circumstances, but you must put your hope in the Lord. This is the key to defeating overwhelming conditions. When you shift the focus of your thoughts from yourself (and all that you have to do) to GOD and His amazing power, you open a door for Him to help you overcome every challenge you face!
Let us look to the Word and see how our Father would have us handle it when we are overwhelmed. We know that Jesus was sent to Earth to live like us so that we would have Him as an example of how to handle every situation we face.
For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:15—16, NKJV
Just before he was arrested, Jesus described Himself as overwhelmed:
He took Peter, James and John along with him, and he began to be deeply distressed and troubled. “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death,” he said to them. “Stay here and keep watch.” Going a little farther, he fell to the ground and prayed that if possible the hour might pass from him.
Mark 14:33—35, NIV
This passage teaches us important steps on how to respond when life overwhelms us:
- He told his friends how He felt.
- He solicited their help.
- He separated himself.
- He prayed, taking His burden to His Father.
What a good example Jesus set! When you feel overwhelmed, ask for help and try removing yourself from the situation. Beloved, this is the most important part—take it all to God in prayer. I can’t tell you how many times I have fallen to my knees, wherever I am, humbling myself and asking God for His help. There is no shame in it. In fact, it is what God WANTS us to do!
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy.
Beloved, please do not think that you must come to your “extremity” before coming to the Lord Jesus for your deliverance. You do not have to be on the verge of giving up on everything, or running away, to receive the flow of the Holy Spirit through your life.
The devil’s lies prevent us from coming to God. It’s only when we are at the end of our rope, when all natural resources have been exhausted, and every other avenue of help has come to a dead end that we turn to God. Don’t give your circumstances the credit for bringing you to a place of belief and dependence on God. You do not have to be in desperation to attain the flow of the Holy Spirit in your life!
The Bible says, For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil (I John 3:8).
To give the circumstances credit for bringing you to (or back to) God is calling the circumstances “god.” Instead, we can lock onto the message of the power of Christ without being in a desperate condition. We can give God the glory in all circumstances, good or bad: In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you (I Thessalonians 5:18). Which brings us … the peace of God, which passeth all understanding … (Philippians 4:7).
Jesus came here for a purpose, and He accomplished that purpose. He destroyed the works of the devil. He fought and won the victory for all humanity, for every need that has ever come upon the face of the earth, so you can say, “I will not feel overwhelmed and live in the fear of defeat.”
The Bible says, Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone (James 2:17). You say you believe … put your belief into action. Give your situation to Christ, therefore adding works to your faith so that it is not alone.
Beloved, it may not be easy to be honest with yourself and reach out to God for help. Take that courageous step of faith. In Christ, you have the power to overcome! Whatever you are overwhelmed with, right now, give it to Jesus, take God’s promise, and speak it out.
Say this faith declaration out loud: Father, thank You for being my shelter and my strong tower. I know You hold my hand when I am overwhelmed. With You, I can conquer any situation, so I will give my situations to You. You have ALREADY won the victory for me, and have the answer to my every need. I will not feel overwhelmed and live in fear of defeat. Amen.
Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.
